In honor of Black History Month, I’m sharing this video on building an equitable quantum computing future that I produced in 2022 with Dr. Kayla Lee, the Academic Alliance Lead at IBM Quantum. Quantum computing is a burgeoning field of study that has the potential to revolutionize the way we solve problems. To ensure that those defining the future of this new, but fast-moving industry reflect what our society actually looks like, we need to foster a community today.
In 2017, Black students made up just 3% of all students awarded bachelor’s degrees in physics in the United States, and only 2% of all physics PhDs. Historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are a key source of Black talent, especially in STEM, and it’s why IBM has created the IBM-HBCU Quantum Center program. In this video, we discuss strategies to build a quantum future that includes those who have historically been excluded from science and technology.
